New research suggests that self-employed people are happier in their jobs than other UK workers. The kinex team discusses the details of the study below.
Recent numbers from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate that more and more British people are coming to see the benefits of self-employment and being their own bosses. Online publication Start-ups noted that 98,000 more people in the UK started working for themselves in the three months to November 2015, when compared with the same period the year before.
Human resources company a-connect has found that work is a source of happiness for more and more self-employed people in the UK. Small Business writes that when asked whether they’d change jobs, over half (51%) of self-employed people said ‘definitely not’ or ‘probably not.’ However, 51% of full-time employed workers said that if ‘given the opportunity’ they’d ‘change their employment tomorrow.’
The research also looked at how people view work as a lifestyle factor. Interestingly, over two fifths (41%) of self-employed people said their job has either a ‘positive’ or ‘very positive’ effect on both their physical and mental health. In contrast, just 8% of full-time employed people agreed that their job has a ‘positive’ or ‘very positive’ effect on their physical and mental health.
a-connect also found that 48% of self-employed people work 40-50 hours per week, but only 28% of full-time employed respondents could say the same. Meanwhile when it comes to earnings, a slightly higher number of freelance respondents (59% compared to 56%) said they’re satisfied with their salary, believing it to be in line with their output and industry experience.
The self-employed may work longer hours and earn similar pay to other people, but they’re happier than the full-time employed because they love what they’re doing. This passion provides them with the inspiration they need to start exciting new businesses.
