Small business benefits from free broadband

Small to medium businesses (SMBs) are being urged to snap up the government’s remaining broadband grants before it’s too late. kinex looks into the scheme and determines the savings your business could make.

The Scheme

The grants have already helped thousands of businesses improve their broadband connection, in a scheme which aims to assist the UK’s cities to attract better businesses, investment and jobs.

£40 million has been made available for the 2015-16 scheme, issued on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. More than 1,000 requests are being made each week, with no restrictions for city or area – at that rate, they won’t be available for much longer.

The scheme is intended to increase productivity, security, customer service and communications and has already helped a variety of SMBs across all sectors, including architects, estate agents, mechanics, events coordinators, cafes, graphic designers and caterers.

Digital Landscape

The government aims to expand the UK’s digital landscape, enabling the UK to benefit from improved global connectivity and tap into business opportunities worldwide. The grants allow for SMBs to apply for £3,000 to cover the costs of installing faster and better broadband. More than 40,000 businesses have already signed up.

Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey urge SMBs to take up the offer whilst they have the chance: “Our offer to small businesses has been a tremendous success and is proving incredibly popular… More than 40,000 businesses have already taken up our offer which is aimed at boosting both their broadband speeds as well as their bottom line.”
